Mary was born in 1832 in Algarkirk, Lincolnshire, England and her baptism took place on April 29th, 1832 in St Peter and St Paul Church, Algarkirk, Lincolnshire, England. Mary's father was Mr Benjamin Dickinson Clark and her mother was Mrs Ann Mitton Rosling.  Her paternal grandparents were Mr John Clark and Mrs Mary NK. She had three sisters named Eliza, Elizabeth and Caroline.  She was the second oldest of the four children. She had a half-sister named Eliza.
