Eliza was born in 1827 in Algarkirk, Lincolnshire, England and her baptism took place on February 17th, 1827 in St Peter and St Paul Church, Algarkirk, Lincolnshire, England. Eliza's father was Mr Benjamin Dickinson Clark and her mother was Mrs Eliza Rosling.  Her paternal grandparents were Mr John Clark and Mrs Mary NK. She had four half-sisters named Eliza, Mary, Elizabeth and Caroline.
