Caroline was born in 1836 in Algarkirk, Lincolnshire, England and her baptism took place on January 10th, 1836 in St Peter and St Paul Church, Algarkirk, Lincolnshire, England. Caroline's father was Mr Benjamin Dickinson Clark and her mother was Mrs Ann Mitton Rosling.  Her paternal grandparents were Mr John Clark and Mrs Mary NK. She had three sisters named Eliza, Mary and Elizabeth.  She was the youngest of the four children. She had a half-sister named Eliza.
