Elizabeth was born in 1834 in Algarkirk, Lincolnshire, England and her baptism took place on December 25th, 1834 in St Peter and St Paul Church, Algarkirk, Lincolnshire, England. Elizabeth's father was Mr Benjamin Dickinson Clark and her mother was Mrs Ann Mitton Rosling.  Her paternal grandparents were Mr John Clark and Mrs Mary NK. She had three sisters named Eliza, Mary and Caroline.  She was the second youngest of the four children. She had a half-sister named Eliza.
