Melvin was born on November 15th, 1919.  Melvin's father was Charles Ivan Gustafson and his mother was Ellen Gydersen.  His paternal grandparents were John F. Gustafson and Anna Sophia Andersdotter; his maternal grandparents were Mads Gydersen and Christine Jessen. He had three brothers and two sisters, named Roy, Milton (Ski), Lloyd (Jimmy), Helen and Edna.  He died due to a medical problem at the age of 81 in 2000.

Melvin and Dorothy were married in 1940.  They had three sons named Melvin (Chuck), Arthur (Bubba) and Chester (Butler).
