Thomas was born in 1820 in Beer.  Thomas' father was John Boalch and his mother is Mary Whitmoor.  His paternal grandfather was William Hodge Boalch and his paternal grandmother is Phoebe Litton. He had five brothers and five sisters, named Joseph, John, Robert, William, Frederick, Marianne, Sarah, Elizabeth, Martha and Matilda.  He is the fifth oldest of the eleven children.
