Matilda was born in 1827 in Seaton and beer.  Matilda's father was John Boalch and her mother is Mary Whitmoor.  Her paternal grandfather was William Hodge Boalch and her paternal grandmother is Phoebe Litton. She had six brothers and four sisters, named Joseph, John, Thomas, Robert, William, Frederick, Marianne, Sarah, Elizabeth and Martha.  She is the nineth oldest of the eleven children.
