Doris was born in 1896.  Doris' father was William Ward and her mother was Sabina Leach.  Her paternal grandparents were William Ward and Sally Parker; her maternal grandparents were George Leach and Sabina Moore. She had three brothers and four sisters, named Arthur, William, Challenger, Ada, Sabina, Lilian and Sarah.  She was the seventh oldest of the eight children.
