Challenger was born in 1898.  Challenger's father was William Ward and his mother was Sabina Leach.  His paternal grandparents were William Ward and Sally Parker; his maternal grandparents were George Leach and Sabina Moore. He had two brothers and five sisters, named Arthur, William, Ada, Sabina, Lilian, Sarah and Doris.  He was the youngest of the eight children.
