Arthur was born in 1885.  Arthur's father was William Ward and his mother was Sabina Leach.  His paternal grandparents were William Ward and Sally Parker; his maternal grandparents were George Leach and Sabina Moore. He had two brothers and five sisters, named William, Challenger, Ada, Sabina, Lilian, Sarah and Doris.  He was the second oldest of the eight children.
