John was born in 1724.  John's father was Peter Groff and his mother was Barbara (Groff).  His paternal grandparents were Hans Gof (Groff) and Susanna Orendarf Kendig. He had five brothers and a sister, named Jacob, Anna, Henry, Peter, Andrew and Barbara.  He was the second oldest of the seven children.  He died at the age of 72 in 1796.
