John was born in 1883.  John's father was John Wolf Gropper and his mother was Henrietta Stephen.  His paternal grandparents were Hans Hinrich Gropper II and Margaretha Charlotte Schroder.  He had five brothers and five sisters, named Fred, William, Emil, Herman, Ernest, Minnie, Annie, Emma, Alvena and Clara.  He was the third oldest of the eleven children.
