Clara was born in 1893.  Clara's father was John Wolf Gropper and her mother was Henrietta Stephen.  Her paternal grandparents were Hans Hinrich Gropper II and Margaretha Charlotte Schroder.  She had six brothers and four sisters, named Fred, John, William, Emil, Herman, Ernest, Minnie, Annie, Emma and Alvena.  She was the nineth oldest of the eleven children.
