Fred was born in 1877.  Fred's father was John Wolf Gropper and his mother was Henrietta Stephen.  His paternal grandparents were Hans Hinrich Gropper II and Margaretha Charlotte Schroder.  He had five brothers and five sisters, named John, William, Emil, Herman, Ernest, Minnie, Annie, Emma, Alvena and Clara.  He was the oldest of the eleven children.
