John Wilhelm Balfanz

  • John was born in 1841 on the boundry line of France and Germany, called Alsace Lorraine.  John was the second child of Martin Wilhelm Balfanz and Caroline Kline (Klein).
    
    John was 28 years old when he emigrated to the United States from Brehem, Germany, in May 1869, on the vessel, Deutschland.  He arrived with his other family members at the port of New York on May 15, 1869.  He settled in Milwaukee, WI.  He worked at the rolling mills.
    
    He met Alvina Springstroh in 1870.  Alvina was born in the villiage of Zemlin, Province of Hinterpammern, Germany, on October 29, 1849.  She was babtised and confirmed.  She had come to the United States in 1869 with her family.
    
    John and Alvina were married in Milwaukee, WI in 1870.  They were both Lutherans.  They then moved to Black Hawk, WI, were he worked in thehop fields.  They bought a farm in Honey Creek, and spent the rest oftheir lives there.
    
    John and alvina had nine children.  One daughter died in infancy.
    
    John died in 1896.  Alvina got sick in the fall of 1917, but the doctors could not help her.  She died on Monday, June 1, 1918, at 11:30 a.m.  She had the bible verse, 1 Tim 1:15 read at her funeral.  She was buried in the Lutheran Cemetary in Leland, WI.

They had six sons and two daughters, named Charles W, William, Henry John, George F, Edward August, John H, Anna Louisa and Lydia.
