John was born on August 4th, 1886 in Honey Ckeek, WI.  John's father was John Wilhelm Balfanz and his mother was Alvina Springstroh.  His paternal grandparents were Martin Wilhelm Balfanz and Caroline Kline.  He had five brothers and two sisters, named Charles, William, Henry, George, Edward, Anna and Lydia.  He was the seventh oldest of the eight children.  He died at the age of 63 on March 6th, 1950 in Mason City, IA.  His burial was in Memorial Park Cemetary, Mason, City, IA.
