John Joseph was born on October 10th, 1878 in Plattsmouth, Cass, Nebraska. John Joseph's father was John TOMAN and his mother was Antonia ZITKA. His paternal grandparents were Jan (John) TOMAN and Josepha (Josephine) ZABRSA; his maternal grandfather is Michael ZITKA. He had five brothers and two sisters, named Anton J., Joseph, Frank, Edward, Julius Michael, Emalie (Emma) and Josephine A.. He was the second youngest of the eight children. He farmed west of Mynard NE all his life.
His eye sight started to failed him by 1917 because of the cinders where he
worked. Doctors said he could loose his sight if he didn't find a new line of
work. John was a carpenter in the Burlington RR shops. He began farming in 1917
when
he purchased land from Lev Slagle in East Rock Bluff. In 1929 they purchased the
Frank Fight farm that was 240 acres and later purchased another 160 acres
in West Rock Bluff precinct of Cass County and moved there that year. This is
where they lived out their lives.
