His paternal grandparents were Jan (John) TOMAN and Josepha (Josephine) ZABRSA; his maternal grandfather is Michael ZITKA. He had five brothers and two sisters, named Anton J., Joseph, Edward, John Joseph, Julius Michael, Emalie (Emma) and Josephine A.. He was the fourth youngest of the eight children.
