Norah Brooks was born 23 Feb 1920 in Plymouth, Devon and was the daughter of William Pearn Brooks and Gwendoline (Gwen) Jennings. She was an only child. The family lived with her Father's parents on the premises of a dairy and general dealer shop called Ashford Dairy which was in Ashford Road, Mutley, Plymouth. Her grandfather had started the business in the late 1890s? and later took his son into partnership so the dairy was called W.H. Brooks and Son. Norah attended Stoke Damerell High School. During the second world war she was assigned to work in a aircraft factory in Gloucester and only ever came back to Plymouth to visit family.  She never married but she did have a very close friend called Alex with whom she travelled the world. It is not known if her parents ever knew of him, certainly the rest of the family did not until just a few years before her death when he was introduced. Alex used to travel from his home in Kent? (uncertain about the actual place but it necessitated about a three hundred mile round trip) every weekend to stay with her. On the day of her death he had just arrived when she had a heart attack. So by chance (or providence...who knows?) he was with her when she was taken to hospital and with her when she died 20 Nov 2002 at Gloucester. Alex said later that many times he had asked her to marry him but for some reason she never would.
