John was born in 1821 in Bingley, W Yorkshire and his baptism took place there on May 20th, 1821.  John's father was James Ickeringill and his mother was Isabella Longbottom.  His paternal grandparents were George Ickeringill and Hannah Wilkinson; his maternal grandparents were Stephen Longbottom and Grace Atkinson. He had four brothers and two sisters, named George, Jacob, James, Henry, Nancy and Mary Ann.  He was the second oldest of the seven children.  He died at the age of 39 in 1860 in Ballarat, Victoria, Australia..
