Martin Luther's father was Samuel Rinehart and his mother was Lydia Prett. His paternal grandparents were Henry Peter Rinehart and Elizabeth Longanecker. He had five brothers and six sisters, named Henry, William Prett, Jeremiah, John David, Samuel Avey, Ann Rebecca, Elizabeth Catherine, Susan A., Lydia Ann, Mary Ann and Sophia Jane. He was the youngest of the twelve children. He died at the age of 93 in June 1943 in St. Joseph, MO.
