Walter was born in 1889.  Walter's father was Alexander Thomson and his mother was Jane McRae.  His paternal grandparents were Walter Thomson and Jane Adamson; his maternal grandparents were Donald McRae and Janet Watson.  He had two brothers and three sisters, named Andrew, Alexander, Janet, Margaret and Mary.  He was the second oldest of the six children.
