Walter was born in 1822.  Walter's father was Walter Thomson and his mother was Margaret Penman.  His paternal grandparents were Walter Thomson and Isabella Coldstream.  He had a brother and three sisters, named Alexander, Isabel, Christian and Janet.  He was the second oldest of the five children.
