Christian was born in 1827.  Christian's father was Walter Thomson and her mother was Margaret Penman.  Her paternal grandparents were Walter Thomson and Isabella Coldstream.  She had two brothers and two sisters, named Walter, Alexander, Isabel and Janet.  She was the fourth oldest of the five children.
