Alexander was born in 1825.  Alexander's father was Walter Thomson and his mother was Margaret Penman.  His paternal grandparents were Walter Thomson and Isabella Coldstream.  He had a brother and three sisters, named Walter, Isabel, Christian and Janet.  He was the third oldest of the five children.
