Alexander was born in 1856. Alexander's father was Walter Thomson and his mother was Jane Adamson.  His paternal grandparents were Walter Thomson and Margaret Penman; his maternal grandparents were David Adamson and Janet Brown.  He had three brothers and three sisters, named Walter, David, William, Margaret, Jane and Martha.
