David was born in 1866.  David's father was David Manson and his mother was Janet Mowat.  His paternal grandparents were David Manson and Esther Taylor; his maternal grandparents were John Mowat and Barbara MacKay.  He had three sisters named Christina, Barbara and Esther.  He was the third oldest of the four children.
