John was born in 1809.  John's father is Andrew Mowat and his mother was Mary Begg.  His maternal grandparents were Robert Begg and Harriet Nicol.  He had a brother and a sister, named Alexander and Elizabeth.  He was the second oldest of the three children.  He died at the age of 78 in 1887.
