Catherine was born in 1841. Catherine's father was Alexander McNiven and her mother was Euphemia MacDonald.  Her maternal grandparents were John MacDonald and Flora MacDonald.  She had two brothers and two sisters, named Duncan, Malcolm, Flory and Mary.  She was the third oldest of the five children.
