Flory was born in 1834. Flory's father was Alexander McNiven and her mother was Euphemia MacDonald.  Her maternal grandparents were John MacDonald and Flora MacDonald.  She had two brothers and two sisters, named Duncan, Malcolm, Catherine and Mary.  She was the oldest of the five children.
