Malcolm was born in 1843. Malcolm's father was Alexander McNiven and his mother was Euphemia MacDonald.  His maternal grandparents were John MacDonald and Flora MacDonald.  He had a brother and three sisters, named Duncan, Flory, Catherine and Mary.  He was the fourth oldest of the five children.
