John was born in 1771.  John's father was Donald MacDonald and his mother was Flory McLean.  He had three brothers and two sisters, named Archibald, Malcolm, Lachlan, Christian and Mary.  He was the second oldest of the six children.  He died at the age of 63 in 1834.
