John was born in 1847.  John's father was George Groat and his mother was Ann McLeod.  His paternal grandparents were John Groat and Elizabeth Mowat; his maternal grandparents were James McLeod and Isobel Munro.  He had two brothers and three sisters, named James, George, Isabella, Elizabeth and Ann.  He was the third oldest of the six children.
