Isabella was born in 1843.  Isabella's father was George Groat and her mother was Ann McLeod.  Her paternal grandparents were John Groat and Elizabeth Mowat; her maternal grandparents were James McLeod and Isobel Munro.  She had three brothers and two sisters, named John, James, George, Elizabeth and Ann.  She was the oldest of the six children.
