George was born in 1851.  George's father was George Groat and his mother was Ann McLeod.  His paternal grandparents were John Groat and Elizabeth Mowat; his maternal grandparents were James McLeod and Isobel Munro.  He had two brothers and three sisters, named John, James, Isabella, Elizabeth and Ann.  He was the fifth oldest of the six children.
