Elizabeth was born in 1845.  Elizabeth's father was George Groat and her mother was Ann McLeod.  Her paternal grandparents were John Groat and Elizabeth Mowat; her maternal grandparents were James McLeod and Isobel Munro.  She had three brothers and two sisters, named John, James, George, Isabella and Ann.  She was the second oldest of the six children.
