George was born in 1887.  George's father was Archibald Campbell and his mother was Barbara Mowat.  His paternal grandparents were John Campbell and Margaret MacKenzie; his maternal grandparents were Andrew Mowat and Elizabeth Reid.  He had seven brothers and five sisters, named Andrew, John, Archibald, Dan, Robert, Marcus, Alexander, Elizabeth, Margaret, Johanna, Hughina and Barbara.  He was the second oldest of the thirteen children.
