George was born in 1816.  George's father was Marcus MacKenzie and his mother was Margaret Forbes.  His paternal grandparents were George MacKenzie and Christina Forbes; his maternal grandparents are John Forbes and Janet Henderson.  He had two brothers and four sisters, named Donald, Sinclair, Emily, Janet, Catherine and Anne.  He was the oldest of the seven children.
