Sinclair was born in 1826.  Sinclair's father was Marcus MacKenzie and his mother was Margaret Forbes.  His paternal grandparents were George MacKenzie and Christina Forbes; his maternal grandparents are John Forbes and Janet Henderson.  He had two brothers and four sisters, named George, Donald, Emily, Janet, Catherine and Anne.  He was the fifth oldest of the seven children.
