Janet was born in 1826.  Janet's father was Marcus MacKenzie and her mother was Margaret Forbes.  Her paternal grandparents were George MacKenzie and Christina Forbes; her maternal grandparents are John Forbes and Janet Henderson.  She had three brothers and three sisters, named George, Donald, Sinclair, Emily, Catherine and Anne.  She was the fourth oldest of the seven children.
