Donald, known as Dan, was born in 1898.  Dan's father was Archibald Campbell and his mother was Barbara Mowat.  His paternal grandparents were John Campbell and Margaret MacKenzie; his maternal grandparents were Andrew Mowat and Elizabeth Reid.  He had seven brothers and five sisters, named George, Andrew, John, Archibald, Robert, Marcus, Alexander, Elizabeth, Margaret, Johanna, Hughina and Barbara.  He was the nineth oldest of the thirteen children.
