Amanda was born in 1854 in Tennessee. Amanda's father was James Sharp and her mother was Sarah Clayton. Her paternal grandparents were Edward Sharp and Tabitha Dorcas Mayfield (Sharp). She had two brothers and two sisters, named Bedford, Josiah, Mary and Nancy. She was the oldest of the five children.
