Caleb was born in 1862. Caleb's father was George Carroll and his mother was Frances D. Tarrant (Carroll). His maternal grandparents were Leonard Douthit Tarrant and Louisa Jane Webb (Tarrant). He had three brothers and four sisters, named George, James, William, Mary, Louisa, Jemima and Martha. He was the oldest of the eight children.
