Jan was born in 1739 in Wijk en Aalburg and his baptism took place there in 1739.1  Jan's father was Cornelis Dirkszn Sprangers and his mother was Jenneke Verdoorn.  His maternal grandparents were Hendrik Janszn Verdoorn and Magdalena Ariens van der Flier. He had six brothers and two sisters, named Dirk, Hendrik, Adriaan, Peter, Jan, Pieter, Elisabet and Elisabeth Cornelisdr.  He is the youngest of the nine children.
