Pieternella was born on January 31st, 1766 in Giessen and her baptism took place there on February 2nd, 1766.1   Her godmother was Ariaantje Schreuders. Pieternella's father was Thomas van de Laar and her mother was Anna van Driel.  Her paternal grandparents were Cornelis Thomaszn van de Laar and Pieternel Dirksdr van der Velde. She had two brothers named Kornelis and Gerrit.  She was the youngest of the three children.
