Gerrit was born on March 6th, 1763 in Giessen and his baptism took place there on March 6th, 1763.1   His godmother was Geertje Brenen. Gerrit's father was Thomas van de Laar and his mother was Anna van Driel.  His paternal grandparents were Cornelis Thomaszn van de Laar and Pieternel Dirksdr van der Velde. He had a brother and a sister, named Kornelis and Pieternella.  He was the second oldest of the three children.  He died at the age of 79 in November 1842.1
