Kornelis was born on July 2nd, 1760 in Giessen and his baptism took place there on July 6th, 1760.1   His godmother was Geertje Brenen. Kornelis' father was Thomas van de Laar and his mother was Anna van Driel.  His paternal grandparents were Cornelis Thomaszn van de Laar and Pieternel Dirksdr van der Velde. He had a brother and a sister, named Gerrit and Pieternella.  He was the oldest of the three children.
