Sydney was born on August 25th, 1867.  Sydney's father was George Whitehead and his mother was Charlotte Parkin.  His paternal grandparents were George Whitehead and Anne Mary Unknown (Whitehead); his maternal grandparents were John Parkin and Elizabeth Howard. He had five brothers and six sisters, named George, George Stephen, John William, Frederick, Alfred Isaac, Ann Mary, Elizabeth, Mary Jane, Charlotte, Amelia and Cora Franciska.  He was the eleventh oldest of the twelve children.
