Mary was born in December 1857 in Broxbourne, Hertfordshire.¹

Mary's father was James Wright and her mother was Ann Shead. Her paternal grandparents were John Wright and Mary Hockley. She had a brother and four sisters, named Joseph, Martha, Minnie, Lucy and Ada. She was the second oldest of the six children.
