William was born in 1759 in Wednesbury, Staffordshire and his baptism took place on November 4th, 1759 in Saint Bartholomew, Wednesbury, Stafford.1 2   William's father was Joseph Turvey and his mother was Sarah Francis. He had five brothers and five sisters, named Joseph, Solomon, John, Joseph, Silvanus, Sarah, Milly, Maria, Martha and Nancy.  He was the third oldest of the eleven children.
